Ciao Italy! Journey through a land rich in history, art, culture, vineyards and romance. You will spend three nights in the Eternal City of Rome, a glorious city filled with classical antiquities, medieval buildings, renaissance palaces and baroque churches. Spend one night in Assisi, one night in the romantic city of Venice where you will enjoy a gondola serenade along the canalsand another 2 nights in Florence . Then cruise to the isle of Capri for 2 nights on the mediterranean Sea.
Daily Itinerary
Day 1
Depart USA on an overnight flight to Rome.
Day 2
Arrive in Rome and transfer to Hotel. Welcome reception with light meal and drinks. (WR)
Day 3
Begin you trip with an in-depth visit to the Vatican Museums. Continue on to the Basilica and then the Sistine Chapel to see Michelangelo's famous painted ceilings. Later cross the Tiber River to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. The rest of the afternoon and evening is yours to enjoy on your own.(B)
Day 4
Drive to Assisi. Along the way visit Church of Saint Mary of the Angels, where St. Francis died. Continue up Mt. Subasio to the huge Basilica of St. Francis and the frescoes painted by Giotto.(B,D)
Day 5
Arrive in the romantic city of Venice. Enjoy a cruise in a private launch by Palladian churches and 13 palaces to St. Mark's Square. Visit the Doges' Palace, connected to the prisons by the Bridge of Sighs. Next admire the mosaics of St. Mark's Basilica and then visit a glass blowing demonstration.
Tonight take an optional romantic gondola ride on the Grand Canal and listen to the serenades.(B)
Day 6
Today leave the canals of Venice and follow the Po River and then cross the Apennines to the famous 'leaning tower of Pisa' and tour its marble Cathedral and the Bapistery. Continue on to Florence for a 2 night stay. Tonight sample the fine Florentine cuisine accompanied by Chianti wine at the included dinner.(B,D)
Day 7
Today immerse yourself in Florence. Begin with a walking tour of the historic city center. You will view Michelangelo's monumental figure of David in the Academy Gallery. Next is the Gates of Paradise, the political heart of Florence. Attend a leather working demonstration and also enjoy a wine tasting to sample some of the robust Reds of Tuscany and learn about their origin.(B)
Day 8
Drive south through the rich volcanic hills of Frascati, with a pause at the Commonwealth War Cemetery overlooked by the austere monastery of Montecassino. Follow the scenic cliff top road to the picturesque resort of Siorrento where you will overnight.(B)
Day 9
Investigate the art of 'intarsio' or marquetry wood inlaying this morning in Siorrento. Board the boat and cruise to Capri, the 'Isle of Dreams', for a 2 night stay. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to enjoy the island or take an optional tour to visit Axel Munthe's Villa San Michele. Tonight take a traditional evening stroll (passeggiata) to see and be seen. Then you are offered a selection of local restaurants for your included dine-around dinner.(B,DA)
Day 10
This morning leave the beautiful mediterranean Isle of Capri and begin your return journey to Rome. But first visit Pompeii, the roman city covered by ash from the disastrous eruption of Mt.
Vesuvius in AD 79. A locally guided walking tour will take you through the extensive excavations to reveal the daily life of the ancient Roman civilization. Tonight join your fellow passengers for a Celebration Dinner of delicious Italian cuisine, wine, music and a spine-tingling operetta - a true Italian experience.(B,CD)
Day 11
Sadly your tour comes to an end unless you choose to book an optional night in Rome($197) or an extension to Sicily. Transfers to Romes' Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci air port are included this morning..
